A bikini or two piece is a women's swimsuit with two parts, one covering the breasts (optionally in the case of the monokini), the other the groin (and optionally the buttocks), leaving an uncovered area between the two (optionally in the case of the Tankini). It is often worn in hot weather or while swimming. The shapes of both parts of a bikini resemble women's underwear, and the lower part can range from revealing thong or g-string to briefs and modest square-cut shorts. Merriam–Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (11th edition) describes the bikini as "a woman's scanty two-piece bathing suit", "a man's brief swimsuit" and "a man's or woman's low-cut briefs".

In most countries children are out of school during this time of year for summer holidays, although dates vary. In the Northern Hemisphere, some begin as early as mid-May, although in England and Wales, school ends in mid- to late July. In the Southern Hemisphere, school holiday dates include the major holidays of Christmas and New Year's Day. Summer school holidays in Australia begin a few weeks before Christmas and end in late January to mid-February, with the dates varying in different states.
Summer is an important season for the social agenda of individuals. Generally, the summer season in most regions of the world has an evident increase in tourism. Outdoor activity is also a hobby, taken by many people during this season, due to the warmer and more favorable conditions. Also, as baseball players are known as the "Boys of Summer", this sport is a favorite American pastime during summer. Leisure tasks are also associated with summer, due to the number of people on vacation.
In literature, film, television, and on stage summer is often depicted as a care free time to relax, take vacations, find romance, and go to the beach.
